Operating System and Drive Details
WINDOWS VERSION COMPATIBILITY:
Drivers can be installed automatically via Windows Update with support for Windows 10, 8, 7, and XP. Not compatible with ARM-based Windows RT/Surface RT. Note that Microsoft limits multiple display support in Windows 7 “Starter” Edition to mirroring screens. MAC COMPATIBILITY:
Mac is not supported due to significant limitations in the operating system.
LINUX COMPATIBILITY:
As of Linux kernel 2.6.31, this adapter has open source drivers in the kernel staging tree. As of 2.6.38, the driver was promoted to the main kernel tree. Configuration of X Windows for USB displays is still distribution and scenario dependent, however, and only for very adventurous users. A USB graphics adapter is a “virtual” device that uses your machine’s CPU and memory to render graphics. It then transfers just the pixels that change over the USB 2.0 cable to the device. The screen itself is refreshed continually (60 times a second) by hardware over the monitor’s own cable, from memory on the device.

  • When nothing on a USB screen is changing, the PC is doing little or no work and nothing is going over USB. Meanwhile, the screen continues to refresh directly from the device.
  • However, when most pixels on the screen is changing, your CPU is doing the heavy lifting, and also the (480Mbs) USB 2.0 bus can become a bottleneck. You may start to notice lags in mouse or window movements.

If you’re experiencing slowness or latency on your USB display:

  • Reduce your screen resolution with the operating system display control panel.
  • Play 3D games and videos on your primary (non-USB) screen.

By reducing the amount of data that needs to be compressed and sent over USB, you’ll increase responsiveness.

Gaming

USB graphics devices, like the USB-VGA-165, are “virtual” devices where much of the heavy lifting is done by the CPU, by hooking into the graphics stack. The DirectX APIs used by games assume direct hardware access (a PCIe graphics card). DisplayLink’s drivers attempt to emulate as much of the functionality as possible, which is why some 3D functionality (like that needed for desktop and apps) works.

We don’t recommend running games with USB graphics, because this emulation cannot be perfect. And even without specific compatibility problems, performance will always be a challenge – the extra CPU work required for USB graphics will be a source of reduced frame rates and problems. Normal desktop and application use are fine because they don’t push the system as hard as 3D games do.

This could be the issue for you as well. This method has worked for many users. Simply follow the steps mentioned below to perform this method.

Step 1. Right-click on the Start menu button and select Device Manager.

Step 2. Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers

Step 3. Look for the first USB Root Hub. In some computers, it could be just one. Right-click on it and select Properties.

Step 4. Go to Power Management tab. Here, unmark the box beside Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power. Click on OK.

Step 5. Repeat Step 3 and Step 4 for other USB Root Hub devices under Universal Serial Bus controllers.

This should fix the problem. Connect your USB device to the USB port and check if your computer recognizes it. If nothing happens, try the next method.

2. Check Power Supply (for laptop users)

Sometimes, the power supply fails to supply the power to USB ports. This can result in USB ports to stop working. Follow this method to fix this issue.

Step 1. Unplug your laptop’s power supply, along with the charger plug.

Step 2. Now, restart the laptop.

Step 3. Reconnect the USB device to the USB port of your laptop.

Step 4. Plug charger and power supply back on your laptop.

3. Uninstall Drivers

In this method, we try to fix the issue by uninstalling the drivers for Universal Serial Bus controllers. The Windows will automatically reinstall the drivers after restarting the computer. Follow the steps to perform this method.

Step 1. Right-click on the Start menu button and select Device Manager.

Step 2. Expand Universal Bus Controllers. Here, right-click on the USB Root Hub select Uninstall device.

Step 3. Repeat the above step for remaining USB Root Hub.

Step 4. Restart your computer.

After performing the restart, the Windows will recognize USB Root Hubs as new device and will install its drivers automatically. This should fix the problem. Connect your USB device and check if it works properly. If it doesn’t, try the next method.

4. Update Drivers

As reinstalling the drivers didn’t work for you, updating them might. In this method, we will update all the USB Root Hubs. Follow the steps to perform this method.

Step 1. Right-click on the Start menu button and select Device Manager.

Step 3. Now click on Search automatically for updated driver software. This will download and install the updated drivers for USB Root Hub on your computer.

5. Turn Off Fast Startup

Step 1. Right-click on the Start menu button and select Power Options.

Step 2. Under Related Settings, click on Additional power settings.

Step 3. On the left side of the window, click on Choose what the power button does.

Step 4. Now, select Change settings that are currently unavailable. This will let you change the shutdown settings.

Step 5. Under Shutdown settings, unmark the box beside Turn on fast startup (recommended). And click on Save changes.

8. Troubleshoot the issue

In this method, we will try to fix the issue using troubleshoot. The Windows will try to solve the problem by itself. Follow the steps mentioned below to perform this method.

Step 1. Go to Cortana and type Troubleshoot. Select the same from results.
