Skype has just released a big update to its Mac application, adding official support for Mac OS X Lion and HD calling.

With Skype 5.3, Mac users can finally enjoy the HD calling feature that PC users have had for quite some time.
To take advantage of the feature, users will need to use one of the FaceTime HD camera built-in to newer iMac and MacBook Pro machines or use an external HD camera like the Logitech C910. Skype recommends that users have an upload/download rate of 1.5Mbps for HD calls.
The new version of the app is also fully compatible with Mac OS X Lion. If you haven't upgrade to Lion, Skype 5.3 still works with Mac OS X versions going back to Mac OS X Leopard.
Skype has been on a tear in recent weeks, releasing an official Skype for iPad app and upping the number of supported Android devices.

For starters Skype for Mac will be bringing back the slim and floating contact list that was apparently a much requested feature that was originally in Skype 2.8. For those wondering what it’s about, the new Contacts Monitor will provide a floating window in which your Skype contacts will be displayed in a simplified list that can be resized and moved around. It even comes with filters for friends, family, Skype, Facebook, etc.
Skype has also brought about Group Screen Sharing which used to be a Windows exclusive in the past. If you are a premium Skype subscriber then this will probably be of use to you, and basically what it does is that it will allow Skype users to share their screen with groups of 10 while video calling, although only one member within that group needs to be a premium subscriber. Other features includes the ability for Skype to reorientate the video call when Skyping with a mobile user when he/she rotates their phone. Last but not least, Skype has also announced that its latest version of Skype is OS X Mountain Lion ready, which we guess is just in time given that the platform is expected to launch in July.
